Santiago is the capital of Chile, with approximately 5 millions of inhabitants and concentrating a great part of the cultural, economic, industrial and commercial activity of the country. The oldest and most important buildings are in the center of the city. Beginning, with the Plaza de Armas around which are the Cathedral Church with its museum, constructed during the century XVIII; the Building of the Central
Post Office, the palace of the Real Audiencia, constructed at the end of the Colony in which had place the first Board of Government of Chile, today National Historical Museum. Near the square is located the Casa Colorada, with the Museum of Santiago.
Other interesting places are the Palacio de la Moneda, in front of the Constitución, the Paseo Ahumada, amusing pedestrian walk, Church and the Museum of San Francisco, the National Library and the Santa Lucia Hill, with its beautiful walk and view. To the north area, at the border of the river is the Parque Forestal, with its beautiful and old trees. In front of this is located the Museum of Bellas Artes which contains great part of the collection of paintings and sculptures of the country.
Near the museum is the beautiful and bohemia Plaza del Mulato where different restaurants and pubs are located. Crossing the river to the famous Barrio Bellavista also exist many places where people dance, besides counting with several shops of typical lapizlasuli craft.
Next to Bellavista is the San Cristóbal Hill with its Parque Metropolitano, the Zoo and the Teleférico. |
